| Author : | Topic: Selling song lyrics | Bottom |

I'm not exactly a marketing whiz but I'm a jack of all trades. Most of the songs these days are written and sung by different people. Most "bands" and "music artists" don't write their own lyrics. Instead the lyrics (and music) are written by someone else and they're just a face (I'd say voice but it's so digitally enhanced anyone could sing it). Being a songwriter is a job hard to get into and you get little credit other then a blurb. But you can turn it into cash. I'll tell you three methods I know of. They're the easiest. The others are so complicated I can barely tell a person much less do it myself. Search the internet for forums and communities dedicated to music artists. Not ones where scary fans obsess but the artists themselves post to (Garage bands, the wannabe rappers, ect.). Make several posts with some of your "decent" (don't give out your best or someone will steal it--but make it something that would be noticeable) lyrics. There's a chance some band somewhere will like those lyrics, contact you, and maybe work a deal with you. This, though, will be rather hard because they could be far away. The easier alternative for this is find a local garage band that suits your style. You can search on the internet or at your (or a) High School (or possibly college). Some schools have a "Battle of the bands" and you can attend those to get to know the bands in your area. After that approach them and share some of your lyrics. Get to know them and if they like you, you may be able to be the songwriter for the bands songs. Course--after that you just have to hope they hit it big. And you have to cut a deal with them (getting a percentage off every "gig" they may do). I'm not entirely sure if this could work because I'm not "in the biz" but you could try contact record companies. If your song lyrics are exceptional they may have one of their artists turn it into a song and give you some royalties. COURSE you'll want to be careful. Record companies and artists are notorious for stealing lyrics that are sent in. Show your lyrics to your friends and family and see if you can get some record that you wrote it. Then if you notice a song similar (or is yours) from some artist who belongs to a label you sent it too--sue their asses. |
